Every month, our resident Q Grader and third-generation Wogan, James, searches the world to find a coffee that is ‘weird and wonderful’, and truly excites. A micro-lot, a great back-story, an impressive cooperative, or a particularly unusual taste; once it's gone, it's gone.
We keep the prices of these extraordinary coffees down, so that you have the chance to try something that you might not be able to get your hands on otherwise.
The Izuba washing station (meaning "sun" in Kirundi) is a high-altitude facility located in Runinya, Kayanza Province, Burundi. Managed by RM Burundi, the station is situated near the Kibira National Park, benefiting from a rich volcanic soil and a climate optimized for premium coffee production.
Production & Infrastructure
The station sources coffee cherries from three surrounding hills (Kigeri, Ryamukona, and Mugoyi) and utilizes a nearby river for a consistent freshwater source.
Supply Chain: In 2020, the station partnered with 1,482 local producers (approximately 26% female).
Workforce: Managed by a dedicated local team, employing 2 full-time staff and roughly 250 seasonal workers.
Social Impact & Sustainability
Izuba functions as a community nucleus, providing local producers with agricultural support and infrastructure. The station is committed to ethical labour practices and financial transparency:
Staff Wages: Employees are paid 25% higher than other local washing stations and 33% above the national average salary.
Producer Support: Producers are paid government-set prices for cherries, supplemented by a commitment to provide premiums to both farmers and staff whenever possible.

our story
We, at Wogan Coffee, have been lovingly hand-roasting speciality, ethical, sustainable and traceable coffees since 1970. In our third generation, and a wholly independent family company, you can find us rooted in Bristol; the same city as when Mr Wogan established the business over fifty years ago. Laura and James, grandchildren of the bowler hatted gentleman, now have the ropes firmly in their grasp; James as our resident Q Grader in the Bristol Roastery Headquarters, and Laura in London.
