MONTHLY SPECIAL - China, Banka Farm Washed, Yunnan
MILK CHOCOLATE ~ BLACKCURRANT ~ DATES
Every month, our resident Q Grader and third-generation Wogan, James, searches the world to find a coffee that is ‘weird and wonderful’, and truly excites. A micro-lot, a great back-story, an impressive cooperative, or a particularly unusual taste; once it's gone, it's gone.
We keep the prices of these extraordinary coffees down, so that you have the chance to try something that you might not be able to get your hands on otherwise.
Banka Farm Washed
Banka Farm and Washing Station is located in Menglian Dai, Lahu, and Va Autonomous County in Yunnan, China. The site is named after the two neighbouring villages—Banka Yi and Banka Er—where the coffee cherries are harvested, reflecting the deep connection between the land and the local farming communities.
The Banka wet mill, and a portion of the surrounding farm, span approximately 100 hectares. The operation is at the forefront of innovation in the region, having installed one of Yunnan’s first optical sorters and experimenting with advanced processing techniques such as yeast fermentation. The farm also cultivates new and diverse varieties, including Pacamara and Yellow Bourbon.
The Banka cooperative is committed to creating long-term opportunities for Yunnan coffee farmers through sustainable agricultural practices and industry best standards in sourcing, processing, wholesaling, and exporting. Their coffees are produced with a strong emphasis on sustainability, traceability, and transparency, supplying importers and roasters who share these values.
Harvest
Coffee cherries are hand-harvested from Banka Farm and surrounding villages to ensure optimal ripeness and quality.
Process
- Pulping & Fermentation: The cherries are pulped to remove the skin and fruit, then dry-fermented for approximately 18 hours.
- Sorting: The coffee is rinsed and density-sorted in narrow channels of flowing water.
- Drying: Parchment coffee is spread on drying patios and dried for 5–8 days until stable moisture levels are reached.
Why Wogan?
Sustainable and ethical
We've made it this generation's mission to put sustainability at the forefront. We’ve pledged to be Carbon Neutral by 2030 and are well on our way to getting there. LDPE4 recyclable bags, a Roastery powered entirely by solar energy, and a hell of a lot more.
our story
We, at Wogan Coffee, have been lovingly hand-roasting speciality, ethical, sustainable and traceable coffees since 1970. In our third generation, and a wholly independent family company, you can find us rooted in Bristol; the same city as when Mr Wogan established the business over fifty years ago. Laura and James, grandchildren of the bowler hatted gentleman, now have the ropes firmly in their grasp; James as our resident Q Grader in the Bristol Roastery Headquarters, and Laura in London.
