Cafe Feminino – Empowering Women in Coffee

Cafe Femenino is an organisation that allows coffee producing women to be directly compensated for their work. After realising that their quality of beans were superior to those of their male colleagues, in 2004, Cafe Femenino was established in a bid to promote female self worth and recognition for their dedicated hard work. Its success has led to a movement spanning nine countries, and has empowered women to take on leadership roles, own land, and earn extra premium for their premium beans, as well as funding local healthcare centres and schools through their Foundation.

Cafe Femenino’s founders, Isabel and Victor, sold their first batch of coffee in 2004. Later that year, they gave a presentation at the SCAA event in order to raise awareness. Later in 2004, The Foundation was established, which now raises funds for grant request from women in coffee producing regions on a global scale.

Victor: “This recognition has given women respect and self-esteem, and has enables them to participate in and make decisions that they were previously denied. In communities where the programme is present, abuse and marginalisation have been greatly reduced”.

Wogan Coffee sources and imports exceptional artisan and speciality coffees from sustainable and ethical farms worldwide, hand-roasting every single bean to perfection, while building a better future for growers and their families.

Something that has remained constant since 1970 when Wogan Coffee was established, is the importance of origin. Through visiting several of the coffee farms from which we source, we have seen the value of ethical processes, of sustainability, of supporting farms that raise the standard of living of their communities, and of making sure that the farmers are paid a fair wage. For these reasons, we are proud and passionate about Cafe Femenino, and thrilled that it is an empowering establishment that we have avidly supported for the past ten years. By donating a percentage of our bean sales to Cafe Femenino, we help to support the Cafe Femenino Foundation, ensuring that this inspirational business can continue to grow and expand.

Mr Wogan: “We have been roasting Café Femenino for over ten years. It is consistently full of character, well graded, of exceptional quality and a pleasure to roast. It’s always fantastic when such a brilliant coffee comes coupled with a worthy cause.”
